Tom was one of many Coast Guard members and civilian employees who became certified as facilitators to help Coast Guard units address process improvement and decision-making using quality tools.
Since retiring from the Federal Government in 2004, Tom has continued to practice facilitation, primarily with non-profit organizations (NPO), and has worked with over 20 organizations in such disciplines as conservation, health and wellness, and social service.
Tom recognizes that all NPOs need to “build capacity” to survive and thrive. Tom helps them do this as a facilitator by working with them to build teamwork, do strategic planning, and raise funds to pay for staff and programs.
He does this with a set of skills to help them accomplish their goals. In doing so, he helps them learn to effectively managing group dynamics, become high-performing teams, and get the most input from their members. Tom typically works with the boards and leadership of organizations, but has worked successfully with entire alliances, roundtables, and councils.
Besides working with NPOs as a facilitator, Tom has served on the boards of many NPOs as a working board member. In this way, he has gained considerable expertise in how NPOs should function at their maximum effectiveness, and imparts that knowledge to NPOs when he facilitates their efforts during team-building workshops or strategic planning processes.
Tom has a passion for helping NPOs achieve their highest good. He is more motivated by the intrinsic reward and fulfillment he receives than by external reward. As a result, he has a flexible fee schedule that can accommodate the typical NPO’s budget.
